By the end of the post, having taken on board the information, you should know a lot more about this type of worktop and you should be able to compare it against the many other countertops available both in stores and online.

  • 1. Corian worktops, manufactured by DuPont, are the original solid surface worktops. They have been in existence for approximately 30 years.
  • 2. Corian is made by combining natural minerals, alumina trihydrate and acrylic polymer. The worktops are solid all the way through and are, as a result, very hard wearing.
  • 3. Corian surfaces are very hard to scratch, yet they are simple to repair if the worktop has suffered some surface damage.
  • 4. The worktops and are nonporous, meaning that bacteria, dust and dirt cannot penetrate beyond the surface. This is obviously very hygienic as germs cannot fester within the worktop.
  • 5. Corian can be fitted so that a seamless finish is achieved. This not only looks marvellous but it also ensures that the smooth worktop is very easy to wipe and keep clean.
  • 6. Even though Corian kitchen worktops are currently available in over 100 different colours and styles, DuPont are continuously extending their range. The countertops are available in both matte and gloss finishes. The wide array of different available looks means that you will be hard pressed not to find a suitable worktop for your kitchen layout.
  • 7. All Corian worktops come with a 10 year warranty.
  • 8. All DuPont Corian kitchen worktops must be installed by a qualified fitter. This is to ensure that the joints are made seamless and there are no visible edge seals.

Corian worktops are not cheap. In fact, if you are on a very strict budget, they are probably not the worktops for you. You will be able to purchase laminate worktops, most wooden worktops and other solid surface worktops (such as maia worktops) for less than it will cost you to install Corian. However, you do get what you pay for with Corian. Yes, it is quite expensive, but in return for your hard earned money you receive a worktop which is both highly functional and very good to look at. If you are not redesigning your kitchen on a tight budget, and then it might be worth you looking into Corian surfaces in more detail.

thanks for the Corian info – I am keen to go with Corian in my new kitchen as I love the look and feel of the surface – but is it practical ? I’m worried about stains and scratches so would like to hear from anyone who has had this surface in their kitchen for over 5 years or so – are they still happy ?
