Metal Worktops

Most restaurant kitchens have metal worktops. These are either topping a freestanding unit (on wheels for easy cleaning) or fitted as part of a run of kitchen units. The catering trade selects metal worktops because they are really hygeinic and hardwearing. The stainless steel worktop is incredibly easy to clean and maintain. It can simply be wiped over with a cloth, and doesn’t need oiling or waxing becasue it is waterproof. In addition to this, becasue a metal worktop is shiny, any food spills will be very noticeable. They will be easy to spot and thus the surface is easy to keep clean. The fact that the metal counter top is also smooth also helps to avoid dirt and grime accumulating. The cleaning of a textured worktop would not be so simple.

Another benefit of a metal worktop is the fact that it is very heat resistant. A hot pan or dish can be placed straight from the oven or microwave onto the metal work surface. This would not be the case with a wooden or laminate worktop.

It is clear that metal worktops are a sensible choice for caterers, but do they work in the residential kitchen? The answer is yes, providing you get the styling right. If you want your kitchen worktop to blend into your room, then metal is probably not a wise choice of material for you. Similarly, if you have a country style kitchen. But, if you have a modern style kitchen and want your worktop to be a mjor part of the design, metal and stainless steel worktops in particular can be an amazing investment.

I’ve seen some kitchen designs where a stainless steel work surface has been installed to contrast with other more traditional elements, but although this can look stunning, it is a difficult style to pull-off effectively.

Metal worktops are quite affordable and because they are hardwearing they should be a good investment for the future. You do have to watch out that they don’t scratch, but this usually only occurs if you are cutting directly onto the steel surface. In addition to stainless steel worktops, you can also buy copper worktops. In the right design, these too can look fabulous, and they complement wooden kitchen furniture musch better than stainless steel counters do.
